$25 Million – Pascagoula, MS
Services: Fire Protection Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Interior Design, LEED Consulting
The design was to upgrade and renovate housing facilities at the Lakeside facility in Pascagoula, MS. This facility consists of housing and support facilities for service members to reside while ships are being outfitted at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula. The Lakeside building is a two-story structure totaling an approximately 200,000 SF on a 37 acre site and was constructed as a design-build project. The design included spaces for residence, exercise, food service, administration, and utility. The scope of work included a fully sprinkled building with a brick masonry exterior and a new asphaltic roof. Utilities included: domestic and fire water services, sanitary sewer connection, electrical and gas service, fire alarm/Mass Notification systems, storm drainage and water quality design. Other features included: DoD Antiterrorism Standards, comprehensive interior design, landscaping, commissioning, and LEED Silver Certification. The building design included precautions for flooding, as Hurricane Katrina flooded the first floor of the facility in 2005.
$22.7 Million – Eglin Air Force Base, FL
Services: Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, LEED Consulting
This facility consolidates operations, support, wing plans, emergency operations and command post facilities to direct functions associated with the Combat Search and Rescue Mission on Moody AFB and geographically separated units. The EOD Barracks building is a three-story structure totaling 174,000 sq. ft. and was constructed as a design-build project. GSE’s design included fire alarm and mass notification systems for the entire building. The design included a fully sprinkled building with a brick masonry exterior. Other features included: DoD Antiterrorism Standards, comprehensive interior design, landscaping, commissioning, and LEED Gold Certification.
$13 Million – Shaw Air Force Base, SC
Services: Fire Protection Engineering
The USAFCENT Headquarters at Shaw AFB is the Central Command Headquarters for the Air Force operations in the middle east. The design-build Scope consisted of building a 2 story 50,000 sq. ft. office addition on an existing 3 story 89,000 sq. ft office building. GSE’s scope consisted of providing complete fire protection and life safety design throughout the existing building and its addition. The project included newly created and/or existing Sensitive Compartment Information Facilities (SCIF’s) which included offices, servers, communications centers and video teleconferencing facilities.
Site engineering provided by GSE included the incoming water supply for both portions of the project and provisions for fire department access in accordance with DoD Anti-Terrorist standards. GSE provided engineering design and inspection services for all life safety systems throughout the project as well as passive fire protection features. In addition, a new Mass Notification system was designed to provided supervision and notification throughout both buildings. Our Scope included the design of fire sprinkler and standpipe systems. Seismic protection design for all systems was included. commissioning systems was also included.
Retrofitting fire protection in the existing building required working with Air Force Command personnel who needed to remain in place to provide vital support for the Air Force efforts in the middle east. Many unknowns in concealed spaces above ceilings were present in the existing building due to security issues in this project. To accommodate this GSE provided on-site daily consulting to expedite engineering oversight of changes necessitated by these unknown variables. The work required a 100% escort requirement by the government.
Moody Air Force Base, GA
Services: Fire Protection
GSE provided design and shop drawings for a new hangar and weapons release building. The hangar utilized wet pipe sprinklers with high expansion foam and a fire pump. The weapons release building incorporated some high hazard areas due to ammunition and explosives ordinance storage.
$32 Million – Tuskegee, AL
Services: Leed Consulting
Moton Field was the only primary flight training facility for African-American pilot candidates in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. The National Park Service plans to commemorate the contribution of the Tuskegee Airmen to the war effort and to the subsequent Civil Rights movement through the creation and development of the Tuskegee Airmen National Historical Site. GSE was responsible for the LEED consulting for this project. The project consisted of the rehabilitation of Moton Field in Tuskegee, AL, and included the Tuskegee Airmen Museum, National Historic Site, and Visitor's Center. All buildings on the site were re-constructed, where possible. A Visitor's Center was added on the site, as well. All existing and new buildings were required to comply with the LEED Certified level as defined by the USGBC. GSE coordinated with the architect, landscape architect, and all engineering disciplines to ensure that LEED requirements were met in the contract documents. The design team was awarded the 2006 John Wesley Powell Prize for Historic Preservation for its work on this project.

Multiple projects have been executed for ASA by GSE. Some examples include:
1. GSE provided full fire alarm design for the supercomputer room. Additionally, GSE provided a study to replace the existing Halon system with a more eco-friendly agent. GSE prepared all necessary bid documents, solicited proposals from contractors, and provided bid assistance during the process. Also, we were tasked with construction management and start-up of the system.
2. GSE provided engineering and project management for a HVAC upgrade and replacement in the supercomputing room. Mechanical and Electrical engineering services were required for the installation of precision HVAC units to maintain space requirements.
3. GSE provided engineering and project management for a fire alarm replacement for the facility. The Owner required specific functions from the fire alarm system, such as internet capability, and this was incorporated into the design.
